  1. Heat – All chicks that come home are going to be cold their body temperature is 103. IF they were being raised by hen they would be under her keeping warm the whole time. However, when you bring home chicks or they come in the mail the first thing they are going to need is to warm them up. Have a place ready for them to do so. Two most popular ways to achieve this is a Brooder Lamp or Brood Heat Pad. For the sake of time I would suggest looking at both and find out which one you like the most.
  2. Bedding- Chicken Bedding is usually in the form of Pine Shavings or you could use straw. But do not use newspaper, it could get too hot under a Brooder Lamp and it could be dangerous. Pine shavings are also might be the easiest to clean, and who doesn’t like a clean dry house, or bed?
  3. Water- You are going to have to show your Chicks where the water is. Take two or three little chicks and dip their beaks into the water, just to show them where it is. The ones you dip will show the rest of them where it is. I personally dip all the beaks. Where do you house water but with a Chicken water. Click on the affiliated links to pick out one you like.
  4. Food- You are going to need two things. One food, chicken scratch or Chicken Crumbles and a place to put it. I let the chicks eat as much as they would like for the first couple of weeks, until they get there feathers.
  5. Grit- Last but not least is Grit. Grit are small stones or pebbles that the chicks will eat to help them digest food. Because they do not have teeth to chew, they need Grit to help with that.

That’s it the Top 5 things you need to set up for your chicks.
